The H7002C Spring-Loaded Roller facilitates the tarp deployment and retraction on Pioneer Rack and Pinion tarp systems. The extruded aluminum roller housing contains an internal shaft and coil spring, along with several precision-engineered components which give the roller its durability and strength. This roller mounts between the tarp arms, and is lifted over the load rather than being mounted at the front of the chassis, on top of the gantry tower, like the H7002 Roller. This roller is compatible with the Shurco/Donovan SWAT 1803805

The roller is driven by the internal spring, which is preloaded with tension at the time of installation. The torsional pressure stored in the internal spring causes the roller to automatically roll up the tarp as the arms move the roller forward over the load.

Important Note: Please see winding instructions to avoid roller issues. Wind counter clockwise from driver side (see full installation guide for complete details). Tarp should roll under the roller.

H7002C Rebuild Components:

Please note, it is extremely difficult to replace parts on this roller. The parts are treated with medium-duty Loc-Tite thread locking adhesive to prevent fixtures and fasteners from coming loose during the daily abuse that these rollers take. The internal steel components may develop rust over time, and any dents or slight bending in the housing make it nearly impossible to remove the bearings and cones. If it is a new roller, and you accidentally wound the wrong way and broke the spring tails that hook into the spring-anchor tabs, then you may have a chance at replacing the spring, but generally speaking, the time and labor needed to rebuild will almost certainly be more than the cost of a full replacement. But nevertheless, here the individual parts:

Pioneer Tarp Roller Bar Care and Maintenance: BE CAREFUL! The spring-loaded roller drives the rolling function of the tarp system, so it is under A LOT of torsional pressure. Often, the quick release of that tension, or the incorrect loading of that tension is what causes failure in the internal spring. Make sure your team follows the instructions and doesn't "figure it out" when replacing a tarp or installing a system. That can easily lead to damage and injury.

To get the most life out of your H7002C roller, follow these guidelines:

  • Don't allow the roller to slam down on the container or on the front tray. Dents in the roller housing prevent the internal spring from properly expanding.
  • Use the stabilizer bar properly, letting it rest on the rear door of the container. The roller should NOT rest on the container.
  • Do not wind in the wrong direction! That will ruin your new roller.
  • Do not overtension. Pioneer recommends 7 rotations to preload tension, at the front of the truck. Overtightening will cause the spring to bind on the internal shaft. Servicing the roller at the back of the truck is not recommended.
  • Do not "pull the bolt out" and let the spring unwind all at once. This overstresses the spring and anchor tabs.
  • Do not let the arms over hang the back. That causes bounce and twisting, which can bend or warp the roller shaft.

Roller assembly has a one-year warranty. Please note that warranty is voided in the case of improper installation/winding, so please follow winding instructions as referenced above. A damaged spring can be replaced with a H7008A replacement torsion spring (keep in mind the difficulty of replacing an internal spring).
