Lightweight lumber tarps give flatbed drivers a faster and safer method of covering their loads. A typical 8' drop flatbed tarp can weigh up to 120 lb, whereas our Heavy Duty Lightweight Lumber Tarps come in at just 83 lb. That's 30% lighter!
There are lighter solutions out there, such as 14 oz vinyl tarps, parachute lumber tarps, or airbag tarps, but the material is just thinner and weaker, resulting in expensive tarps that are easily damaged. After researching and testing several options, we decided to try Cordura®, an industrial-grade woven nylon fabric known for its superior abrasion resistance and heavy-duty performance. We were able to create a flatbed tarp that is just as strong and reliable as standard 18 oz PVC tarps, but not nearly as bulky and burdensome.
With these lightweight lumber tarps, you don't have to worry about them being fragile or easily pierced. Flatbed tarps take a beating, and Cordura takes it on the chin. You can drag it across asphalt, poke it with S-hooks, and tug on it all you want and it won't bat an eye. As with any tarp, we do still recommend using padding, moving blankets, or other protective measures to extend the life of your tarp, especially over sharp edges and corners. The fabric is highly water-resistant, but if water is allowed to pool, or if you're driving non-stop through a torrential downpour, it is technically possible for water molecules to condense on the underside of the tarp. For that reason, we use 18 oz vinyl on the top, end flap, and rain flaps, and Cordura on the sides. Problem solved. So you can rest assured that your load will arrive safe and dry, and you won't need to go to the chiropractor after the job is done.
Cordura was invented by DuPont in 1929. Since then, it has been updated and innovated and is now used in a variety of applications, ranging from military bags to tires to motorcycle clothing to luggage and more. It has become the go-to fabric for industries where water resistance, strength, and durability are crucial. You can learn more about Cordura here.
