Silage tarps, originally designed for covering and sealing silage, have become a versatile tool in agriculture, widely adopted for weed control and soil preparation. These heavy-duty, UV-resistant polyethylene tarps are commonly used in market gardening to suppress weeds by blocking sunlight, creating conditions that encourage weed seeds to germinate only to die off without light. This technique, known as "occultation", helps reduce weed pressure, improve soil health, and save labor by eliminating the need for extensive tilling.

In their traditional role, silage tarps are used to cover and protect fermented animal feed (silage), ensuring an airtight environment for proper fermentation. By covering silage crops such as grass or corn, the tarps maintain an anaerobic environment, which preserves the nutrients in the feed for livestock and prevents loss of usable silage.

Silage Tarp Weed Control Instructions:

• Prepare the area by removing large debris
• Spread the tarp over garden beds with the black side up for most effective weed control
• Secure the edges with weights like cinder blocks or sand bags to prevent wind from lifting the tarp
• Leave the silage tarp in place for 2 to 4 weeks or until stale to kill weeds
• Remove tarp and store folded in a shaded area
